Extreme heatwave threatens your IT hardware

Last year was a record-breaking summer in Europe and with the Siberian extreme heatwave we risk ending another record year. With climate change, it is likely that there will be problems with extreme heat for many years to come. 

This affects not only people but also IT hardware as fans, hard drives, PSUs, processors etc. are worn out faster due to the heat. Typically, temperatures rise in racks that are farthest from the cooling unit. One tip is to place smaller hardware in front of the cabinet and have a front-to-back cooling, regardless of how, for example, the switch is configured. This ensures that enough cool air passes through the switches regardless of how they are positioned in the cabinet.

Data centers not only have the heat itself to worry about, but also fires and flooding create problems with the electricity outage (and possibly threaten the data center itself).
